Door middel van een traceroute-programma kunt u zien hoe de netwerkverbinding tussen twee machines loopt. Ook kunt nagaan of en waar zich op deze route problemen bevinden. Dit komt van pas als u wilt uitzoeken waarom u een bepaalde host niet kunt bereiken.

The traceroute describes the information packet's route to the chosen Internet host by listing all the network stations and routers along the way. The route's "length" is indicated by the number of those centers or so called "hop count". The connection quality to each networkstation is tested 3 times by sending a special information packet, which generates in return an answer package (ping). The connection channel's through-put capacity can be evaluated by the variance between round trip times (shown in seconds) on each line.
